At the beginning of my adventure with horse photography, I made 4 negatives at the Partynice Horse Racing Track in Wrocław. The topic is very demanding. You must have reliable equipment and knowledge of how to deal with difficult photographic conditions. Back then, in 2004-2005, half of my photos just didn’t come out. They were often blurred or cut off. With digital cameras, you can take more shots and use the burst/sport mode. Another thing is the knowledge of the subject, i.e. horses and the races themselves. It was important to me not to create dangerous situations on the track in pursuit of this one shot. I think that the respectful and humble approach to the people involved in training and competitions as well as to the horses is crucial here.

This photographic topic has great potential for me. It is dynamic, vivid, full of emotions – an interested and a wise photographer can create photos that will win competitions. It is always a pleasure to watch a good photo report from races. I chose this topic as the subject of my diploma thesis in a two-year photographic study, but I did not manage to implement it. The photos were too little artistic.

Currently, the most common images of horses are posed portraits of a man and a horse. These photos are obviously pleasing to the eye, because usually their authors are able to make good use of the available light and editing possibilities. In a way, I am old-fashioned and I appreciate more, for example, the work of Zofia Raczkowska, the most famous Arabian horse photographer in Poland in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

Those photos were already beautiful when the photo was taken. The author knew how to hit the moment and choose the light. I’ve always wanted to take such photos. Times have changed and now I admire super sharp, vivid and heavily edited photos. I think it would be ideal for me to be able to combine these two ideas.

Reportage photography also requires a good technique and eye. Additionally, a good report tells a story. We do not look at one beautiful photo then, but at the whole, composed of many and taken over many days, weeks and months. This is real quality. On my FB page, I will share with you my favorite horse photographers from time to time. I will also share some good photos from the races. For me, they are motivation, but watching them is also relaxing, I could look at these pictures for hours.

Aparatami cyfrowymi można zrobić więcej ujęć i wykorzystać metodę zdjęć seryjnych. Kolejna sprawa to znajomość tematu czyli koni i samych wyścigów.

Ja w pewnym sensie jestem starej daty i bardziej doceniam na przykład twórczość Zofii Raczkowskiej, najsłynniejszej fotografki koni arabskich w Polsce w latach 60., 70., 80.
Tamte fotografie były już piękne w momencie robienia zdjęcia. Autorka umiała trafić w moment i dobrać światło.

Fotografia reporterska też wymaga dobrego warsztatu i oka.
